Third year of this award-winning disability short fringe theatre festival, producing 12 plays by playwrights with disabilities.
TUBU Fest returns to Ground Floor Theatre from Thursday, September 24, through Saturday, September 26, with performances at 7 PM each night. This is the festival's third year, and the name tells you exactly what it's about: Theatre for Us By Us. It's a disability short fringe festival based here in Austin that works with Central Texas artists to produce original work by playwrights with disabilities from around the world. This edition brings 12 plays to the stage over the three nights.
Accessibility isn't an afterthought here—it's the whole point. The festival describes itself as a safe space for people with disabilities to have their voices heard, and it backs that up with a standard set of accessibility features: audio description, ASL interpretation, large-font and screen-reader modified scripts, and fully wheelchair-accessible rehearsal and theatre spaces. It's the kind of thoroughness that makes the "By Us" part of the name meaningful.
This year also carries a personal weight for the community. The festival honors the memory of Lynn Beaver, an Austin theatre icon and TUBU Fest member and director. Beaver directed Dog and was set to co-direct Springsteen & Caffeine before her passing. The festival has already picked up an Austin Theatre Critics Award Special Citation for spotlighting theatremakers living with disabilities, and this third edition continues that work.
