Trio Los Vigilantes present Bolero Centro, a project that preserves the stories and context of bolero music, with audience participation.
Trio Los Vigilantes bring their project Bolero Centro to the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center on Friday, September 18. The show is in the Black Box Theater at 600 River Street, and it's more than just a set of songsโit's built around the stories and context that give bolero music its meaning over time.
Each evening follows a three-part structure. It starts with a full opening set by the trio, followed by an intentional pause where audience members are invited to contribute their own stories. Then the trio returns for a short closing set. Those audience memories are kept in the Bolero Centro Archive for the future, so the night changes depending on who's in the room and what they bring to it. The project is supported in part by a grant from Austin Arts, Culture, Music, and Entertainment.
The venue itself is a good fit for the work. The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is dedicated to the preservation, creation, presentation, and promotion of the cultural arts of Mexican Americans and Latino cultures. It reopened to the public on June 6, 2026, following Phase 2 of its 2018 Facility Expansion Plan, and it also houses gallery exhibitions, cultural arts classes and camps, and artist-run programs like the Caminos Teen Leadership Program and the Latino/a/e Artist Access Program.
