Tommy Campbell plays Monks Jazz Club on Saturday, August 15, with local musicians joining him on stage. The evening is presented by the Jazz Purveyor, and it's a double bill: the first show starts at 7:30 PM, with doors opening at 7 PM, and a second show follows at 9:30 PM, with doors at 9 PM. If you're around earlier in the day, there's also a masterclass at 2 PM.
Campbell is a modern jazz drummer from Philadelphia, and he grew up in a musical house—his father was an organist and singer, and his uncle was NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Smith, the Hammond B-3 virtuoso. He went to the Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1979 and later teaching there, where he picked up a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.
His long run with Dizzy Gillespie stretched from the late 1970s through the 1990s and ended with a personal jam session with the master just a few months before Gillespie died in January 1993. Since then, he's played alongside Sonny Rollins, John McLaughlin, The Manhattan Transfer, Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Jordan, Tania Maria and Gary Burton, and he's been featured on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.

Monks is at 310 E. Saint Elmo in Austin. Between the masterclass at 2 PM and the two shows starting at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM, there's plenty of room to fit in whatever part of the day works for you.
