Concert by the folk and Americana duo Tipps and Obermiller at NeWorlDeli in Austin.
Tipps and Obermiller play NeWorlDeli on Sunday, September 27, at 2 PM. They're a folk and Americana duo from Fort Worth, and the show is just the two of them.
Behind the name are Hilary Tipps and Steve Obermiller, who met and fell in love more than thirty-five years ago. Before they were writing songs together, they spent years working in teaching and nursing, so this isn't a project born out of a music degree or a lifelong pursuit of the stage. Their debut album, Love (and other mysteries), pulls from folk, Americana, and country, and they've talked about drawing on whatever style fits each song rather than sticking to one sound. It's a record that lets them move between those styles as the material calls for it.
They've picked up some kind of a reputation for the songwriting side of things. Americana Highways described them as songwriters who "captivate the way Delaney & Bonnie once dignified music," and Kelly Kieke of The Tattler in Quitman, Texas, called them "amazing songwriters" who fill the stage with energy. They write and perform songs they say can make an audience laugh and cry, which is a fair way to sum up the folk and Americana tradition they're working in.
