Theatre production of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's tragicomedy The Visit, directed by Sunghyun Lim, presented by the University of Texas Theatre & Dance.
University of Texas Theatre & Dance is bringing The Visit to the B. Iden Payne Theatre this fall, with the run opening on October 29 and continuing through November 8. It's a production of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play, translated by Maurice Valency and directed by Sunghyun Lim.
If you haven't come across it, The Visit is a grotesque, twisted tragicomedy. It opens in a small, dismal town where the community is preparing for the arrival of a mysterious millionairess—a former inhabitant they're hoping will return as their benefactor. When she finally arrives, cloaked in grandeur and offering to share her millions, the townspeople are ecstatic. That lasts until they learn the condition of her generosity: the town must murder one of its own. From there, the play weaves a macabre, grandiose, and at times hilarious tale that looks at the power of greed and desperation, and the lengths people will go to in the name of justice.
It's a heavy one, and the production doesn't shy away from that. The show includes depictions of revenge, contract killing, and human trafficking, and you'll hear a prop firearm and loud noises simulating gunfire. It's the kind of thing that's worth keeping in mind before you head in.
