Concert by The Secret Sisters, an Alabama folk-country duo known for their harmonies, at The State Theatre.
The Secret Sisters play the State Theatre on Monday, December 14. The duo is made up of Alabama-born siblings Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle, who come from Florence, and their music draws on the sounds of the South and the Muscle Shoals tradition—country, bluegrass, gospel, and classic rock. They've been known for their harmonies and for songs that grapple with the thornier aspects of life, love, and womanhood, with lyrics that thread hard-won insight into motherhood, commitment, compassion, and self-preservation.
Their first two albums were recorded with producer T Bone Burnett. Their third studio effort, Mind, Man, Medicine—their fifth full-length—was produced by Brandi Carlile and Tim and Phil Hanseroth, and it's built around a kaleidoscopic sound that blurs the edges of country-folk. Between the early records and the newer material, there's a fair bit of ground to cover.
