The Iguanas, a New Orleans band blending Tejano, blues, jazz and Caribbean sounds, live at The Continental Club.
The Iguanas play The Continental Club on Saturday, July 18. They're a New Orleans band that's been together since 1989, and they've spent more than three decades playing a sound that's hard to pin down with one label. They pull from Tex-Mex, Cajun, R&B, rock, blues, Caribbean rhythms, and Latin grooves, and they often switch between English and Spanish in the same set.
That mix comes from a few different places. The Tejano and Conjunto sounds of the Texas-Mexico border are right there, alongside American blues, jazz, and New Orleans R&B. Over the years they've put out several studio albums and have been a regular act at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The lineup is the same one that's been around for decades: Joe Cabral, Rod Hodges, René Coman, and Doug Garrison. Along the way they've worked with Emmylou Harris, Allen Toussaint, and Alex Chilton.

There's a local connection here, too. The band spent some time in Austin during a brief exile forced by Hurricane Katrina, and they've kept the same core lineup ever since, continuing to tour their version of Americana. The Continental Club is at 1315 South Congress Avenue, and the cover is $20 cash at the door.
