Screening of Tsai Ming-Liang's 1998 film The Hole, restored in 35mm, presented by the Austin Film Society.
AFS Cinema is screening The Hole on Friday, September 11, at 7 PM, with a second showing on Monday, September 14. It's a 1998 film from Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang, who also made Goodbye, Dragon Inn. This particular screening is part of the World Cinema Classics series, and it's presented in a newly struck 35mm print that Ming-liang himself approved.
The Hole is an unusual one for Ming-liang: a movie musical. It's set in a post-apocalyptic Taipei ravaged by a cockroach pandemic, where a hole in the floor accidentally bridges two quarantined apartments. The neighbors on either side start to communicate and fall in love through jazzy musical numbers. Critics have called it an eerily prescient film and one of the finest examples of the Taiwanese New Wave—a deadpan musical about seeking a friend at the end of the world. It runs 1 hour and 29 minutes, plays in Mandarin with English subtitles, and is 35mm, so you're seeing it on film rather than digital.
