The Golden Hour Heptet plays Monks Jazz Club on Tuesday, July 28, in a live-taping and listening-room concert. They're a swing group that draws on the jazz artists of the 1930s and 40s, and the set mixes their own original arrangements with fresh takes on classic tunes.
Their list of influences reads like a who's who of that era: Don Byas, Slam Stewart, Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams, Johnny Hodges, and Billie Holiday. The group has built a following with the swing dance community here in Austin and nationally, and they usually play dance halls and ballrooms. This is a different setting, though. Monks is a listening room, and that smaller space lets them reach for a broader repertoire than they'd typically pull out for a dance floor.
Monks itself started as a pop-up listening room and has since grown into a state-of-the-art audio and video recording studio and event space in the heart of East Austin. It runs a curated concert series featuring improvisational jazz groups and musicians from across the region. This particular night is billed as a live-taping, so the performance will be recorded.

Doors open at 7:15 PM and the show starts at 7:30 PM. The club is at 310 E Saint Elmo Rd, Unit B, in East Austin, and they'll have ice, wine keys, and 9oz cups on hand.
