The Expendables are playing Central Machine Works on Friday, September 25. They're a surf rock band from Santa Cruz, California, and this is a headlining date in Austin.
If you haven't crossed paths with them before, the sound is a mix of reggae, punk rock, and 80s-style dueling guitar solos. They've been together since 1997 with the same four members: Geoff Weers on guitar and vocals, Adam Patterson on drums and vocals, Raul Bianchi on lead guitar, and Ryan DeMars on bass. After putting out three independent albums, they signed with Stoopid Records, and their 2007 self-titled album became an instant classic. Their 2010 follow-up, Prove It, debuted at #158 on the Billboard Top 200 and featured guest spots from members of Slightly Stoopid and G. Love.
They're known for touring relentlessly, with runs alongside 311 and NOFX, and they still put on their annual Winter Blackout Tour. The Santa Cruz roots come through in the surf rock, but the reggae and punk elements keep it from staying in one lane. With two guitars in the mix, those dueling solos are a good part of what they do live.
