World premiere of The Egg by The Zahir, a comedy about identity, technology and surveillance.
The Zahir brings The Egg to the Rosette Theatre at the Baker Center on October 29, the world premiere of a comedy about identity, technology and surveillance. It's written by Noah Masterson and directed by David Ritch, and it runs through November 21, so you've got a few weeks to catch it if you can't make the opening night.
The show lands in a world both miserable and delighted by dark magic and even darker technology, where freakish birdpeople, illegal surgery and out-of-control tech are the norm. Three social misfits navigate love and friendship under a rigid surveillance state, and the story grapples with identity, isolation and connection in an age of algorithms—and what happens when corporations take artificial intelligence to its logical extreme.
This is the second production from The Zahir, a newly founded company that creates original theatre, film and storytelling projects designed to spark conversation, with a focus on new work that's bold, intimate and alive to the anxieties and possibilities of modern life. Their inaugural production, Oversight by Austin writer L.B. Deyo, ran July 30 to August 22 at Hyde Park Theatre and was described as an intellectual thriller staged with Hitchcockian audacity. The company also puts on Zahir Nights, a series of benefit performances featuring short plays and monologues.
