If you're not familiar with the name, it helps to know how the band came together. They started as Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, with Del on guitar and his brother Jerry on bass. The lineup shifted in the 1980s when Del's sons joined in — Ronnie on mandolin and Robbie on banjo — and by 1988 they'd dropped the Dixie Pals name. Fiddler Tad Marks and bassist Mike Brantley came on board in the early 1990s, and that's when they became a national touring act.
They've spent the last few decades working their way through the bluegrass awards. In 2004, It's Just the Night earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, and they took home the award in 2006 for The Company We Keep. They've also stepped outside their own records to play on others, including Steve Earle's 1999 album The Mountain.
