A book club discussion exploring literary adaptation, prompted by bestsellers and films based on books, at BookPeople.
The Book Club Was Better is hosting a discussion on Frankenstein at BookPeople on Monday, October 12, at 7 PM. It's part of their ongoing series that looks at what gets lost or found when a book becomes a movie, a play, or any other kind of adaptation.
The conversation usually starts with a specific titleβin this case, Mary Shelley's Frankensteinβand goes from there. The group talks about the differences between the page and the screen, the choices a director makes when they change a plot point, and the things a book can do that a movie just can't. It's less of a formal lecture and more of a book-club discussion, so it's as much about the conversation as it is about the book itself.
That's where the series gets its range. While Frankenstein is the focus for this one, the discussions usually pull from a few different places: bestsellers with buzzy new adaptations, under-the-radar classics, and films that the audience might not have even realized were based on books. It's a good way to see how the same story can be told in completely different ways, and to talk about why some versions work better than others.
