Concert by the Austin psych-rock band The Black Angels at Mohawk venue.
The Black Angels play Mohawk on Thursday, December 4, 2026, at 8 PM. It's a hometown show for a band that's spent two decades rooted in the same psych-rock they started with.
They formed here in Austin back in 2004, and they've stayed true to the psych-rock forebears that shaped them. Names like Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Arthur Lee, and the Velvet Underground come up on The River, and that lineage runs through everything they do. Their presence in the scene is tied to the Levitation Festival, which they've helped anchor as the genre's ground zero—it's celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.
Their more recent work shows where they've gone from there. Following the 2017 album Death Song, released on Partisan Records, Wilderness of Mirrors leaned more heavily on Mellotron, strings, and keyboards. They co-produced that record with Brett Orrison and Dinosaur Jr. engineer John Agnello, and those textures—the Mellotron in particular—are a good way to get a sense of how their sound has shifted over the years.
