Special screening of documentaries exploring the hidden stories behind the iconic 23rd Street mural, followed by a conversation with Kerry Awn.
The 23rd Street Mural Project comes to AFS Cinema on Thursday, September 10, at 7 PM. It's a special screening of documentaries that dig into the hidden stories behind Austin's first mural, and it's followed by a conversation with Kerry Awn.
If you've driven past the mural on 23rd Street, you know the wall. Since 1974, it's been restored, repainted, and updated five times, adding new faces, buildings, and even more Austin armadillo eggs along the way. The project turns that wall into a living documentary archive: you can explore it online and find short original films about the characters, venues, musicians, and wild stories that helped shape the city. This second season brings new films about legendary clubs, queens, killers, and a real-life miracle, all narrated by Skip Hollandsworth with original music by The Octopus Project. After the premiere, the films join the interactive archive at 23rdstreetmural.com.
