An evening-length interdisciplinary dance work by Sanchita Sharma that explores themes of migration, surveillance and refusal through movement, text, music and lighting.
Sanchita Sharma brings Textures of Opacity to Crashbox Theatre this September, with four performances running Thursday the 24th through Sunday the 27th. It's an interdisciplinary dance piece that weaves together spoken text, music, movement and lighting design, rooted in the traditions of improvisation and postmodern dance.
On stage, the work is set up as a durational encounter between two bodies and three walls. The dancers work with the audience and the architecture itself, animating the walls, chairs, stairs and garage doors of the performance space. It's not a traditional stage setup—the room becomes part of the piece.
Sharma draws on the experiences of people with histories of familial migration, who know what it means to be routinely monitored, measured and controlled. From there, the work asks how such people devise ways to remain immeasurable, excessive and in refusal to become legible and assimilable. It poses a few questions it leaves for you to sit with: Can refusal be imagined as participation, as freedom, as survival?

Choreography is by Sanchita Sharma, with dance artists Aída Hernandez-Reyes and Lily Zapatero. The show runs about 50 minutes, with doors opening half an hour before. It's supported in part by a Nexus Grant of Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment.
