An annual festival celebrating plant-based living with cooking demonstrations, educational lectures, live music, food vendors, and a dedicated youth area.
Texas VegFest returns to Fiesta Gardens on Saturday, September 12, from 11 AM to 6 PM. It's the 11th edition of the festival, which is put on by the Texas Veg Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that describes its mission as bringing the benefits of vegan food to Texans from all walks of life. For more than a decade, the event has drawn around 5,000 people each year, and it's run as a free public gathering with operational costs covered by donations.
The day mixes cooking demonstrations, educational lectures on the health, environmental and animal benefits of plant-based diets, live music and food from numerous local vendors. This year's cooking demos feature Jesus Mendoza (Mr. Natural), Hannah Kaminsky (Bittersweet Vegan) and Gabby Martinez (Casa de Luz East). There's also a dedicated youth area with its own demos, yoga and face-painting, so it works as a family outing as much as a solo trip. Austin Resource Recovery will have a booth there with kitchen compost collectors available.

Fiesta Gardens is at 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St, on the shores of Lady Bird Lake in East Austin. The grounds are managed with Texas Disposal Systems Green Events to keep them green through waste prevention and recycling. The festival runs rain or shine, and they set up water stations, cooling tents, large fans and portable A/C units for hot weather. Friendly pets are welcome, and Cap Metro bus routes 22 and 17 serve the venue. It's free to the public, and anyone who donates $5 or more gets a thank-you swag bag.
