Texas Radio Live concert featuring Bill Kirchen at Moontower Saloon, continuing the legacy of Austin's longest-running live music radio program.
Texas Radio Live is back at Moontower Saloon on Wednesday, October 14, with Bill Kirchen taking the stage. It's a live-stage continuation of Larry Monroe's show Texas Radio, which has been running on Austin radio longer than any other live music program in the city.
Monroe moved to Austin in 1977 with the goal of putting Austin music on the radio. He joined KUT in 1981 and started Texas Music, later renamed Texas Radio. In 2011, he brought the program to Sun Radio, where founder Daryl O'Neal helped re-imagine it as a live show, first staged at Guero's Taco Bar. The show continues today after Monroe's death in January 2014, broadcast live across Central Texas on the Sun Radio Network and streamed worldwide at SunRadio.com. It hosts the latest singers, songwriters, and musicians that call Texas home while paying tribute to many Texas musicians who have gone before.
Kirchen is a Grammy-nominated guitarist, singer, and songwriter, and a founding member of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, whose Hot Rod Lincoln hit the Top Ten in 1972. He released Cat out of the Bag on May 22, 2026, so there's new material to hear alongside the older songs. The show is broadcast live on the Sun Radio Network and streamed at SunRadio.com, so it's one of those nights where you can be in the room and hear it go out over the air at the same time.
