Sylvia Benitez opens a new solo show, The Way Back, at Wally Workman Gallery on Saturday, September 12. The opening reception runs from 6 to 8 PM, and the exhibition stays up through October 4.
Benitez has spent nearly twenty years captivated by the shifting moods of the Central and South Texas landscape, and preserving that land's mercurial character is what drives her work. She doesn't go for realistic renderings; instead, she creates imagined, archetypal landscapes drawn from memory that feel instantly recognizable, letting the land's visual poetry guide her dialogue with the canvas. It's a way of painting that captures the spirit of the place rather than just the view.
She's a widely exhibited, nationally recognized artist who has received numerous awards and grants, and she lives and works in Seguin, Texas. The gallery hosting her is a local fixture in its own right: Wally Workman Gallery was established in 1980 and is housed in a 120-year-old historic home. It specializes in emerging and collected talent and has spent decades advancing local artists onto the national stage.
