Book signing with author Susan Metallo for her young adult historical romance Hearts on the Table.
Susan Metallo is coming to BookPeople on Monday, November 9, for a reading and signing of her debut novel, Hearts on the Table. It's a queer, trans and neurodivergent reimagining of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night set against the backdrop of World War I. The story follows Violet, a seventeen-year-old English feminist with a mathematical mind and a penchant for thrashing men at cards, who washes up on an enemy-controlled island after her ship is sunk by a u-boat. To find her missing twin brother, she disguises herself as a man. The prose alternates with verse chapters told from the perspective of Faustina, an autistic musical prodigy.
Metallo is a queer and neurodivergent young adult author whose previous book, Reasons to Hate Me, was named one of Publishers Weekly's Best YA Books of the Year and received honors from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association. She formerly served as Regional Advisor of SCBWI New Mexico and now lives in Virginia.
