School of Rock Austin students perform live in their own bands at the Summer End of Season Shows at Mohawk Austin.
School of Rock Austin is taking over Mohawk on Sunday, September 27, for their Summer End Of Season Show. It's a long day of music, running from 11 AM to 7 PM, and it's a bit different from your usual gig: the students rock both of Mohawk's stages at the same time, so it plays out more like their own little music festival than a single bill.
If you're not familiar with how School of Rock works, it's built around the idea that students learn by playing in bands. They take weekly private lessons in guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, and drums, and then they get into group rehearsals to prepare for live shows. The school puts on these showcases around every three months, and this one is the summer finale—the sets are put together by the students who've been working all summer to get them ready.
That performance-first approach is the whole point. In their own words, "we don't teach music to do shows; we do shows to teach music." The shows are the reason they're learning the songs in the first place, and this season marks a move to a new venue, with the students splitting their time across both stages. It's a good way to see a lot of different bands in one afternoon.
