Sullivan Fortner Trio, winner of the 2024 DownBeat Critics Poll for Rising Star Jazz Group, performs live at the Moody Amphitheater as part of the ATX Jazz Fest.
Sullivan Fortner Trio plays the main stage at Moody Amphitheater on Saturday, April 3, 2027, at 11 AM. It's part of the inaugural ATX Jazz Fest, a new festival from ATX Chamber Music and Jazz that the organizers are billing as the most concentrated gathering of jazz talent ever assembled in Texas. They're bringing together Grammy winners, MacArthur Fellows, and NEA Jazz Masters, with late-night jam sessions and local Austin food vendors mixed in.
Sullivan Joseph Fortner Jr. is a New Orleans native who's been playing since he was seven, when he first started by ear. Two years later he was in church choirs, and by 11 he'd picked up a Cox Cable 'Amazing Kids Award'. He studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts before earning a Bachelor's in Jazz Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a Master's from Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under Jason Moran and Phil Markowitz. Along the way, he's performed with the Marsalis family, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, and Marcus Belgrave. The trio took home the 2024 DownBeat Critics Poll for Rising Star Jazz Group.
