Monthly reading group of the J.C. Elkins O. Henry Literary Discussion Group, focused on the short stories of William Sydney Porter (O. Henry).
The J.C. Elkins O. Henry Literary Discussion Group meets again at the O. Henry Museum on Friday, September 11, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. This month's session is titled Suite Homes and Their Romance.
If you aren't familiar with the group, it's a monthly reading circle dedicated to the short stories of William Sydney Porter, who wrote under the pen name O. Henry. It's named after J.C. Elkins, a docent emeritus of the museum, and they welcome newcomers, so you don't have to be a regular to join in. The museum itself focuses on Porter's years in Austin, the period before the prison term that led him to take up his pseudonym and write some of his most famous work.
That prison stint is the pivot point of his career. It was during that time he wrote classics like The Gifts of the Magi, The Ransom of Red Chief, and The Cop and the Anthemβthe kind of stories that made him a household name. The museum keeps that Austin connection front and center, so the discussion group sits right in the middle of the city where he lived and worked before everything changed.

It's a free event, held at the O. Henry Museum at 409 East 5th Street in Austin. If the museum gets too crowded, they might move the session next door to the Susana Dickinson Museum, but the start time remains the same: Friday, September 11, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.
