La Fenice brings Speak No More: Lovecraft to The Tavern starting Friday, July 31, with performances running Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through August 23. It's a fully improvised, entirely silent immersive theatre experience that draws on the atmospheric dread and eldritch mythology of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. The show is built around movement rather than dialogue, and there's no formal seating or guided path—you roam the space freely, and the story unfolds in three thirty-minute loops, so no two people experience it the same way.
The production centers its music and soundscape on artists of color as a pointed response to Lovecraft's well-documented racism. La Fenice, founded as the Austin Commedia Society and led by Kate Meehan, specializes in physical theatre, and Golden: Silent Improvised Stories has staged dialogue-free work for more than a decade—a format that earned a B. Iden Payne Award for Outstanding Audience Experience. The cast includes Aaron Saenz, Adam Rodriguez, Adrian Prado, Brandon Martin, Cara Arlauskas, Jess Von Schramm, Jordan T. Maxwell, Kareem Badr, Kate Meehan, Kelly Hasandras, Nate Dunaway, Nola Lafayette, Robert Slack, Sarah-Marie Curry, Shannon McCormick, and Tatiana Jitkoff, with radio announcer Tobie Minor.

The venue adds its own layer to the mood: The Tavern at 922 W 12th St was built in 1916, making it one of Austin's oldest continuously operating bars, and it bills itself as the city's most famously haunted. A portion of ticket sales goes to Indigenous Cultures Institute and Dawa. Performances are at 8 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from July 31 through August 23, and tickets are Pay What You Can.
