Smidgen, a Texas folk duo, performs live with Jenna Greene at The Cactus Cafe.
Smidgen play Cactus Cafe on Friday, July 24, with Jenna Greene joining them on stage. Smidgen is a Texas folk duo, and this is a free show, which is a nice thing to run into on a Friday night.
The venue is the Cactus Cafe, located in the Texas Union at 2308 Whitis Ave on the UT campus. It's been a live-music room since 1979, and these days it's booked by KUTX. Over the years, it's built a national reputation on its red-velvet-backed stage, hosting local, regional, national, and international acts. The list of names that have played there reads like a history of Texas songwriting: Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith, Alison Krauss, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Townes Van Zandt, Bill Monroe, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Shawn Colvin, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Billboard once listed it among fifteen 'solidly respected, savvy clubs' nationwide 'from which careers can be cut,' and it was named the 2001 Readers Poll Best Live Music Venue. It's an all-ages venue with a full bar.
