Closing reception of the Seeing Further exhibit by Hakeem Adewumi, with a guided walkthrough led by the artist and curator Regine Malibiran.
Hakeem Adewumi is closing out his solo exhibition, Seeing Further, at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center on Thursday, October 8. The reception runs from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, and it's free and open to all.
Adewumi is a Texas-based artist and photographer, and Seeing Further is his solo show at the Carver. In it, he weaves together Black collective thought, memory, and folklore to look at the Juneteenth holiday. He frames the work around a few questions: What do our celebrations mean, how did we define freedom, and how do we define it today? If you've been following the show, this is the final chance to see it before it comes down.
The highlight of the night happens at 7:30 PM, when Adewumi leads a guided walkthrough of the exhibition himself, joined by curator Regine Malibiran. It's a good way to hear him talk through the work in person rather than just reading the wall text. You can also meet him throughout the evening and pick up a signed copy of the limited-edition Seeing Further exhibition book, which he designed himself.

If you have some extra time while you're there, the museum's Uncovering Carver exhibition is on view alongside it, so you can get a better sense of the museum's broader work. The reception is at the Carver Museum, 1165 Angelina Street, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, with the walkthrough at 7:30 PM. Admission is free.
