Poetry reading and open mic with Lisha Adela Garcia and Cindy Huyser at BookWoman, part of the Second Thursday series.
BookWoman hosts another Second Thursday poetry reading and open mic on Thursday, August 13, with Lisha Adela Garcia and Cindy Huyser as the featured poets. The night runs from 7:15 PM to 9 PM, and it's free to attend.
The evening starts with readings from the selected authors, and from there it opens up into a round-robin open mic. Anyone in the room can sign up to read, and the same goes for anyone joining on Zoom. It's a format that puts the featured poets and the open mic on the same bill, so you'll hear a mix of established voices and people stepping up to the mic for the first time.
This particular night is a bit of a milestone: the Second Thursday series has been running at BookWoman for fifteen years. The evening celebrates that anniversary alongside the featured poets, so it's a double occasion. Over those fifteen years, the series has built a reputation as an accessible entry point into Austin's poetry scene, pairing experienced writers with first-time readers in a relaxed bookstore setting. If you've been meaning to get into the local poetry community but weren't sure where to start, this is exactly the kind of room that makes it easy.

One thing to keep in mind is that the event happens in two places at once. You can catch it in person at BookWoman, 5501 N. Lamar #A-105, or join from home via Zoom, with the open mic open to both. It runs from 7:15 PM to 9 PM, and admission is free.
