Screening of Martin Scorsese's concert film The Last Waltz within the Movies That Rock cycle, presented by KUTX.
AFS Cinema is bringing The Last Waltz back to the big screen on Wednesday, November 25, and Friday, November 27. It's part of the Movies That Rock series, which is presented in partnership with KUTX.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, The Last Waltz is Martin Scorsese's concert film documenting The Band's farewell show. It's a heavy-hitting lineup: Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson on stage, joined by guests like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton. The film captures the whole thing—the music, the backstage chatter, and the general atmosphere of a band calling it a day. It's a concert movie that works as a standalone piece of cinema, and seeing it in a theater is a different experience than watching it at home.
Since it's part of the Movies That Rock series, this isn't a one-off. The series pairs concert films with KUTX, Austin's public radio station, so the whole thing sits right at the intersection of the city's film and music scenes. If you're a fan of The Band, or just like seeing a great concert on a big screen, this is a good one to catch.
