A theatrical experience by Zana Muscove Creates exploring the struggles and resilience of Black people, framed by the line 'Behind every SCAR is a story.'
SCARS - The Legacy opens at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center this weekend, with two performances on Saturday, Oct 10, and Sunday, Oct 11. It's a theatrical experience from Zana Muscove Creates, the project of Zana Muscove, who wrote, directed, and acts in the show.
Muscove pulls from her own lived experience for this one. The production looks at the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of Black people, and it's framed by the line "Behind every SCAR is a story." It's the kind of work that starts with a specific history and lets it speak to the universal truths that connect us all, so while the focus is on the Black experience, the themes of survival and recovery land wherever you're coming from.
The venue is a good fit for it. The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center preserves and exhibits African American material culture, history, and aesthetic expression, and it's also where the show is hosted. The City of Austin is supporting the production, and they've set up a virtual option for anyone who can't make it in person.
