Singer-songwriter Sarah Sharp performs her quintet set at the Elephant Room, continuing her long-running weekly residency.
Sarah Sharp is back at The Elephant Room on Thursday, October 1, with her quintet. If that name sounds familiar, it's because she's been fronting this group every Thursday evening at the venue for the past nine years. It's a weekly ritual that eventually grew into a record after years of people asking her to turn it into one.
Sharp comes to the stand with a couple of different lives behind her. She used to lead the swingadelic Jitterbug Vipers, and she's a respected commercial songwriter with Universal Music. On these nights, though, the focus is on her voice and a cosmopolitan flair for jazz standards, with guitarist Mitch Watkins backing her. Her debut album, Déjà Vu, was recorded right here in Austin with guitarist Eric Johnson, and it brings together nocturnal, atmospheric arrangements across 11 tracks.
That residency has become a fixture of the city's music scene. Daniel Ramirez of Texas Lifestyle Magazine described her voice as "intoxicating," and the years of playing the same room have cemented her place among Austin's elite music-makers. It's the kind of thing that doesn't happen by accident—nine years of Thursday nights is a lot of hours on a stage.
