Closing reception for the group exhibition Sapphic Summer, curated by Sydney Dettmar, celebrating sapphic artistic expression at Bolm Arts Gallery.
Bolm Arts Gallery is hosting the closing reception for Sapphic Summer this Saturday, September 5, from 6 to 10 PM. It's the final night of the group exhibition, which has been on view since August 7, so this is the last chance to catch it before it comes down.
Curated by Sydney Dettmar, the show brings together work by more than 20 local sapphic artists. The title and the whole project take their cue from Sappho of Lesbos, the ancient Greek poet whose verses on love and desire between women gave the word 'sapphic' its name. From there, the exhibition looks at a long tradition of sapphic artistic expression, with the different pieces touching on intimacy, identity, longing, joy, and community. With over two dozen artists involved, you'll see a wide range of how those themes play out across the room rather than one single approach.
It's been a busy run for the show. The opening reception on August 7 featured local sapphic vendors and a Sapphic Songwriters Showcase that kicked off at 8:30 PM. Later, on Wednesday, August 26, the gallery hosted a special 'Ode to Sappho' edition of Bolm Arts' monthly Poetry Open Mic, hosted by artist and poet Nicole Josephine Kline. This closing reception is the final event in that sequence.
