Group exhibition curated by Sydney Dettmar, inspired by Sappho of Lesbos, featuring over 20 local sapphic artists across various mediums.
Sapphic Summer opens at Bolm Arts Gallery on Friday, August 7, with an opening reception from 7 PM to 11 PM. The exhibition runs through September 5, with a closing reception on Saturday, September 5, from 6 PM to 10 PM. Curated by Sydney Dettmar, the show brings together more than twenty local sapphic artists working across a wide variety of mediums.
It takes its name and its spark from Sappho of Lesbos, the Archaic Greek poet whose verses on love and desire between women gave the word 'sapphic' its life. Dettmar describes the show as a celebration of a long and vibrant tradition of sapphic artistic expression, working through themes of intimacy, identity, longing, joy, and community. The artists gathered here come from different perspectives, but they're all driven by the same muse that moved Sappho herself.
Both the opening and closing receptions bring in live performance, and the two nights lean into different traditions. The opening reception features a Sapphic Songwriters Showcase at 8:30 PM with Syd Lizmar, Allie Ingle, BROTHER, and Gwen Best. The closing reception on September 5 hands the floor to poets instead, with typewritten poetry by The Word Fairy and a Sapphic Poets Showcase starting at 7:30 PM.

Between those two nights, the exhibition stays on view at Bolm Arts Gallery, 5305 Bolm Rd Bay 9, Austin, TX 78721, from August 7 through September 5. You can catch the songwriters at the opening on August 7, 7 PM to 11 PM, and the poets at the closing on September 5, 6 PM to 10 PM.
