Russian Circles with Primitive Man

Russian Circles play The Far Out Lounge & Stage on Saturday, November 7, with Primitive Man opening. It's a double bill that puts two very different kinds of heavy on the same stage: the instrumental post-rock of Russian Circles and the crushing doom of Primitive Man.

Russian Circles have spent years building a reputation for instrumental music that doesn't need a singer to carry it. They work in layers, building from quiet, clean guitar lines into massive walls of sound, and they're just as comfortable with the slow-burn as they are with the loud. If you've never seen them live, that's where the physical side of their sound really comes through—the low end hits a bit harder in the room than it does on record.

Opening for them is Primitive Man, whose sound sits in a completely different gear. Where Russian Circles build their songs, Primitive Man tends to flatten them, working in the slow, heavy territory of doom metal. It's a stark contrast to the headliner: one band focused on instrumental movement and the other on sheer, oppressive weight. Between the two, the night covers a lot of ground within the heavier end of the spectrum.
