BookPeople welcomes Rowan Beaird to celebrate the release of 'Tenderness', with a conversation moderated by Jenny Tinghui Zhang.
Rowan Beaird is coming to BookPeople on Friday, July 31, to celebrate the release of Tenderness, his second novel. He'll be in conversation with novelist Jenny Tinghui Zhang, who'll moderate the evening. The talk runs about 45 to 60 minutes.
Tenderness is set in the 1970s on a remote island off the coast of Virginia. The story centers on the wedding of Shay O'Connor and Andrew Pruitt, and Shay has recently left the cult Synanon. The narrative is told through the interwoven perspectives of Shay's brother William, her friend Joel, and Shay herself, and it builds as a slow-burn mystery that digs into dark family histories. Beaird's fiction has appeared in The Southern Review, Ploughshares, and Gulf Coast, and this is his second novel after The Divorcées. New York Times bestselling author Megan Abbott called Tenderness "intoxicating."
Jenny Tinghui Zhang, who's moderating, is a novelist in her own right. She wrote Superfan and Four Treasures of the Sky, an Idaho Book of the Year short- and longlisted for the Chautauqua Prize, the Dublin Literary Award, the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award. She was also named a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree.

The event is free and open to the public, and it's held on the second floor of BookPeople at 603 North Lamar Boulevard in Austin. It starts at 7 PM. Seating is first-come, first-served, and there's no live stream or recording, so if you want to hear Beaird talk about the new book, you'll need to be there in person.
