Ritmo Sonali

Sonáli is performing at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden on Tuesday, October 6, as part of the Umlauf After Dark series. The show is billed as Ritmo Sonáli, and the focus is right where the name suggests: the rhythms. It's a night built around Latin American sounds, with Sonáli on vocals.

If you haven't come across her yet, Sonáli is a Mexican-Salvadorian vocalist based here in Austin. Her voice sits at a cross between classical passion and a more modern sensibility, and she works across a wide range of styles: jazz, Latin jazz, Brazilian rhythms, salsa, cumbia, and Latin soul. The ensemble she leads is rooted in rhythm and danceable melodies, and she performs in formats that range from a duo up to a septet.

That versatility is part of why the setlist can pull from so many different traditions at once. You'll hear the swing of jazz alongside the syncopation of Brazilian rhythms, and the drive of salsa and cumbia. It's a broad reach, but the common thread is the danceable, rhythmic side of Latin music, and the voice that ties it all together.

The show is part of Umlauf After Dark, the garden's evening program. It starts at 6 PM on Tuesday, October 6, at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, 605 Azie Morton Rd, Austin, TX 78704.
