Brazilian jazz pianist Rique Pantoja performs with his Rio Jazz Quintet at Parker Jazz Club.
Rique Pantoja brings his Rio Jazz Quintet to Parker Jazz Club on Wednesday, August 26, for a night of Brazilian jazz in downtown Austin. Pantoja is a Brazilian jazz pianist, composer, and educator who now calls Austin home, and this is his quintet leading the evening.
If you haven't come across his name before, the list of people he's played with gives you a good sense of where he sits. He's shared the stage with jazz and pop icons like Chet Baker, Carlos Santana, and Gloria Estefan, and he's worked with some of Brazil's biggest musical names — Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, and Djavan. That's a lot of ground to cover, from the West Coast jazz of Baker to the global pop of Santana and the deep Brazilian songbook of Nascimento and Gil.
His own playing is described as an innovative jazz style with rich harmonic textures and global collaborations, and he's been called a standout voice in today's music world. With the Rio Jazz Quintet, he's bringing that Brazilian jazz background to the foreground. The set will be led by his piano, with the quintet filling out the sound around him.
