Monthly competitive poetry slam at RichesArt Gallery, where ten poets perform and the crowd decides the winner.
Rhythms and Poetry bring their monthly poetry slam back to RichesArt Gallery on Tuesday, July 28, from 7:30 to 10:15 PM. It's the gallery's regular competitive poetry night, and it follows a pretty set format: three rounds, ten poets, and each one gets three minutes on the mic. The crowd decides who wins, so you're as much a part of the night as the people performing.
Behind the slam is Rhythms and Poetry, an Austin-based poetry and performance collective that describes its work as centering on art and self-expression. This is just one of the nights they run at the gallery. On first Tuesdays, they host Open Mic Night, run by Jay Writes or a guest, and on second Tuesdays, they hold Creative Composition, where you can write alongside other people in the community. Both of those are pay-what-you-can, so they're easy to drop into if you're just looking for a place to write or perform without a fixed ticket price.

The venue itself is RichesArt Gallery, a Black-owned East Austin art gallery and event space that puts on weekly artistic events and painting classes. It's located at 2511 E 6th St unit A, 78702, right in the heart of East Austin. If you're a poet, you get in free, though spots are limited, so it's worth getting your name in early. Otherwise, the slam runs from 7:30 to 10:15 PM.
