Science-themed documentary screening with a presentation and Q&A from UT scientist Bridget Scanlon.
Reel Science returns to the Debra and Kevin Rollins Studio Theatre on Wednesday, October 14, with a screening of The American Southwest. The night is presented by the Long Center in partnership with the UT College of Natural Sciences, and it's part of a series that pairs science-themed documentaries with live discussion. The main feature, The American Southwest, takes its title from the region it covers, and the screening is followed by a presentation and Q&A with UT scientist Bridget Scanlon.
That's where the evening really opens up. Instead of just watching the film and heading home, you get to hear from Scanlon herself, who'll talk through the science behind the documentary and take questions from the audience. It turns a passive screening into a conversation, and since she's a UT scientist, you're getting the context straight from someone who works in the field rather than a narrator on a screen.

The venue is the Debra and Kevin Rollins Studio Theatre, located at 701 W. Riverside Dr. in Austin. It's a flexible black box space that primarily serves local and regional artists and community arts groups, and it's designed to be adapted to suit specific performance needs—which fits the format of a screening followed by a live presentation. The screening starts at 6:30 PM, so you'll have the film and the Q&A all in one evening.
