Red Young performs Hammond B3 organ with Brannen Temple on drums and percussion.
Red Young plays the Hammond B3 organ at The Continental Gallery on Wednesday, October 14, with Brannen Temple on drums and percussion. It's a duo set, just organ and drums, and it's one of the more stripped-down ways to hear Young's work.
If you've come across Young's name in Austin, it's usually in a larger group. He's a multi-faceted organist, pianist, arranger, composer, producer, and bandleader, and his style pulls from jazz, blues, rock and roll, pop, R&B, soul, and classical. He moved to Austin in 2002 and has since become a major force in the local jazz scene. Since 2005, he's toured with Eric Burdon, and he leads Black Red Black, an instrumental hard bop and soul jazz trio with trumpeter Ephraim Owens and drummer Brannen Temple—the same Temple who'll be on drums for this show. Black Red Black has played the same Austin club every Tuesday night for more than five years, so the two of them have a long history of playing together.
Young's reach goes back further than that. He formed the swing band Red and The Red Hots, which played over a thousand shows and preceded the 1990s Retro Swing movement. He's also worked with artists like Sonny & Cher, Joan Armatrading, Linda Ronstadt, Juice Newton, and Dan Hicks. This particular night, though, is just him and Temple, with the Hammond B3 organ taking the lead.
