Red River Watch Party

The Texas Longhorns take on their longtime rival from the north on Saturday, October 10, and if you're not planning to make the trip to the Cotton Bowl, the Paramount and Stateside Theatres are hosting a watch party in downtown Austin. It's one of the city's biggest screens, so you'll see the game in a way you can't at home, with cold drinks, snacks, and air conditioning to keep things comfortable while the game heats up. Austin comedians Danny Goodwin and Hunter Duncan are hosting, which means there's a bit more to the afternoon than just the play-by-play.

The venue itself is a piece of Austin history. The Paramount has stood at 655 Congress for over a century—built in 1915, it's the city's oldest surviving theatre and a City and State Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It started as a vaudeville and variety house, and it still stages comedy, drama, music, dance, spoken word, children's programming, and film, drawing more than 200,000 patrons a year. It's also one of the few remaining 'hemp houses' in America, still working with ropes and sandbags. It hosts Austin's red-carpet film premieres as part of SXSW and the Austin Film Festival, and it's home to the Moontower Comedy Festival. The Paramount runs alongside the State Theatre next door under the Austin Theatre Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
