Queer film screening of Muppets from Space in honour of Jim Henson's birthday, featuring Gonzo, as part of the Queer Film 101 series.
Cheer Up Charlies is screening Muppets from Space on Sunday, September 20, as part of its Queer Film 101 series. The showing is in honor of Jim Henson's birthday, and it puts the spotlight on Gonzo, who the organizers call the queerest Muppet of them all. They describe him as a gender-nonconforming, chicken-adjacent icon and "radical weirdness wrapped in feathers, felt, and musical numbers."
Muppets from Space is the 1999 film where Gonzo discovers he's actually an alien, and the screening fits right into the Queer Film 101 program, which looks at cinema through a queer lens. If you've spent any time with the Muppets, you know Gonzo has always been the one who doesn't quite fit in—the one who loves the strange and the absurd—so framing him as a queer icon feels like a natural fit for the character.
Cheer Up Charlies is a good spot for this kind of thing. It's an ambiguous, everybody space known as an LGBTQIA & friends hangout for music, art, dance, and partying, with local kombucha on tap. It's the kind of place where a Muppet movie screening fits right in.
