Indoor market-style event featuring rare and exotic houseplants from growers worldwide, plant-related crafts, and educational programming on plant care.
Plantmania takes over the Palmer Events Center on July 18 and 19, bringing together rare, exotic, and popular houseplants from growers around the world. It's set up as an indoor market, so you'll find growers from across the globe selling side by side, with plant-related crafts and educational sessions running throughout the weekend. The whole thing is hosted by Prop & Grow, a Tampa-based shop that specializes in aroids and rare finds, and it was founded by Jeanie Baas, owner of the interior plantscaping company Plants Unlimited Inc.
Beyond the shopping, there's a full slate of educational sessions. Styling Houseplants looks at how to actually arrange your collection in a room; Pest ID and Management is the practical side of keeping things alive; and Tissue Culture Acclimation gets into the more technical process of moving lab-grown plants into soil. The educators leading these are a mix of local and visiting experts: Savannah Baas specializes in kokedama; Destin Noak is known as 'Texas Garden Guy'; Drew Martinez runs Carnivero, the carnivorous plant shop right here in Austin; and Jim Thrash is a fifth-generation farmer and tropical plant collector.
