An evening of Azerbaijani and Brazilian music with Paula Maya and Goosheh, featuring traditional acoustic instruments and complimentary refreshments.
Paula Maya and Goosheh are bringing together Azerbaijani and Brazilian music at the North Austin School of Music on Saturday, September 26. It's a double bill that puts two very different traditions on the same stage: Goosheh Music Group handles the Azerbaijani and Iranian side, and Paula Maya & Bossa Nova Plus take the Brazilian side. The evening blends traditional acoustic instruments from Iran, Azerbaijan, and Brazil with electric guitar and bass, so you'll hear those older sounds sitting right next to a modern rhythm section.
Paula Maya is a pianist, composer, arranger, and band leader who picked up two Global Music Awards Silver Medals in 2026—one for Best Instrumentalist and one for Best Jazz. She's the one leading the Brazilian half of the night, and Goosheh brings the Azerbaijani and Iranian influence to the other. The two acts share the bill rather than playing separate shows, so the night moves between the two traditions.
There's a bit more to the evening than just the music. Complimentary refreshments and small bites from Brazil, Azerbaijan, and Iran are served on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you want to sample the food along with the music, it pays to get there early. The whole thing is supported in part by a Live Music Fund Grant from Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment.
