Community jazz jam with saxophonist and ethnomusicologist Paul Klemperer; open to all skill levels, free and all ages.
Paul Klemperer hosts his Community Jazz Jam at Barrel O' Fun on Thursday, September 17, starting at 7 PM. It's a session open to players of all levels and all genres who want to explore the jazz tradition together in a fun, relaxed setting. If you play, you're welcome to sit in; if you don't, you can just hang out and listen.
Klemperer is an Austin saxophonist, composer, teacher, and ethnomusicologist, and his work centers on building community through music. That's exactly what this jam is built around. It's not a formal performance with a setlist, but a session where the music happens in the room, shaped by whoever shows up to play. The open-door approach means you don't have to be a pro to get involved—it's as much about playing as it is about listening and figuring things out as a group.
The jam is sponsored by CreativeSEA.org and is framed as a way to discover creative potential as a group, which fits the whole spirit of the thing. It's all ages, so it works whether you're coming with a group of friends or just stopping by on your own. The session runs at Barrel O' Fun, 1911 Aldrich St Suite 120B, in East Austin.
