Irish singer-songwriter Pat Byrne performs live at The Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas.
Pat Byrne plays The Saxon Pub on Monday, September 7, at 6 PM. He's an Irish singer-songwriter from Borris who moved to Austin in late 2017, and he's spent the years since then working his way into the local scene. He broke out in the US in 2019, playing the 30A Festival, SXSW, the Kerrville Folk Festival, and the Americana Festival.
His second US release, Into the Light, has an edgier feel than what came before, and it sits across folk rock, folk, and Americana. It's a record that leans into both emotional depth and a bit more confidence, blending new influences with his Irish heritage. The set will be built around his own songs, and he'll be the only name on the bill.
There's a particular lineage that people have linked him to. Folk Alley, writing at the 30a Songwriters festival, described him by combining the transcendent poetry of Bob Dylan, the gritty rock-n-roll storytelling of Bruce Springsteen, and the political activism of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. It's a high-profile comparison, but it points to where he fits: folk-rooted songwriting that doesn't shy away from a story or a point of view.
