A theatre piece about a spaceship crew searching for a Second Earth and confronting questions of love, loss and faith while pulled into a black hole.
Bottle Alley Theatre Company brings Passage to the Smelt House on East 6th, running from Friday, July 17 through August 1. It's a space-bound drama that starts with the nine crew members of the Aquarius 300 searching for a Second Earth, only to be pulled into the gravitational forces of a black hole. From there, the story turns inward, forcing the crew to confront questions of love, loss, and faith as they face the inevitable.
There's a bit of history behind the script: Passage was written collaboratively as a radio play by a group of Austin-based theatre artists back in 2020. This production brings it to the stage, directed by Sarah Hogestyn. The cast is a large one, with Will Gibson Douglas, Brooke Eden, Rosalind Faires, Franny Harold, Marian Kansas, Katy Matz, Ronan Melomo, N.R. Oglesby, and Brennan Patrick serving as both co-writers and performers.

Bottle Alley describes itself as a company of independent, experimental, and honest theatre of cruelty, with a specialty in found-space theatre and a commitment to strictly original work. That found-space element is on display here, as they're staging the piece at the Smelt House rather than a traditional theater. The play runs from July 17 through August 1 at the Smelt House, located at 2511 E. 6th Street in Austin.
