A Filipino holiday celebration bringing Christmas to Austin in September, featuring a community potluck, hands-on parol crafting, and Christmas card making.
Pinoy Potluck is bringing Christmas to Austin in September with Pasko Na!, a Filipino holiday celebration taking place Sunday, September 6, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Ani's Day and Night, 7107 E Riverside Dr #6709. The title comes from the Tagalog phrase for "It's Christmas!" and the timing is the point: in the Philippines, the Christmas season starts early, and this afternoon does it the same way.
The whole thing is built around community and hands-on crafting. The organizers hand out bamboo sticks, glue, rubber bands, and dowels so you can build your own parol frame—the star-shaped lanterns that are a hallmark of Filipino Christmas. There's also paper for making Christmas cards and ornaments, so you can spend the afternoon making things by hand. It's the kind of event where you can hang out and work on your project while you chat with the people around you.
Then there's the potluck. Everyone is encouraged to bring a Filipino dish to share, and if you aren't in a position to cook, you can order from Filipino-owned restaurants and food vendors instead. Contributions like cutlery and ice are also welcome. It's a shared meal in the truest sense, with the food coming from the people who show up.
