A thriller play by L.B. Deyo presented by The Zahir, where lawmakers confront a consequential threat in a single location.
The Zahir is bringing Oversight to the Hyde Park Theatre this summer, with performances running Thursdays through Saturdays from July 30 to August 22. It's a thriller by Austin writer L.B. Deyo, whose script for Apprehension took home Outstanding Original Script at the 2025-2026 Austin Theatre Critics Awards.
The play traps you inside a closed committee hearing as lawmakers confront a consequential threat. It all unfolds in a single location over about an hour, driven by tightly coiled, snappy dialogue and a focus on the impact of new technology. The Austin American-Statesman called it "an impeccable intellectual thriller" staged "with the audacity of a Hitchcock masterpiece." The production is billed for fans of Hitchcock or Dr. Strangelove, and for anyone looking for an evening of bold, original storytelling.
Behind the scenes, Oversight is the very first production from The Zahir, a company that creates original theatre, film, and storytelling projects. It's directed by Marcus McQuirter, chair of the Drama Department at Austin Community College. McQuirter brings a deep background to the role: a BFA in Directing from Howard University, an MA in Theatre from the University of North Texas, and a PhD in Performance as Public Practice from the University of Texas at Austin.
