A horror-themed book club session exploring Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House at BookPeople.
The Nightmare Factory Book Club is meeting at BookPeople on Tuesday, October 20, to talk through Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. It's a horror-themed book club that pairs reading with the genre's more unsettling tendencies, and this session focuses on one of the most famous haunted house stories ever written.
If you haven't read it, The Haunting of Hill House follows four people who gather at a notorious estate to study paranormal activity, only for the house to start working on them in return. It's less about jump scares and more about the slow, psychological unraveling of the characters, which makes it a good fit for a group discussion. The club's whole premise is to lean into thatβthey describe their goal as helping readers "navigate the bloody byways and diabolic depths of your fears."

It's a free event, so you can just show up and join the conversation. The meeting starts at 7 PM at BookPeople, one of Austin's long-standing bookstores, which is a fitting place to talk about a book that's so focused on the atmosphere of a single building. Whether you've read the book a dozen times or this is your first time through it, you're welcome to come and talk it out with other readers. The session is free, and it kicks off at 7 PM on Tuesday, October 20.
