Nicholas Payton and Charles McPherson, presented by the Jazz Purveyor

Nicholas Payton and Charles McPherson are playing Monks Jazz Club this weekend, September 18 and 19, as part of a series presented by The Jazz Purveyor with support from The Live Music Society. It's a two-night run with two different lineups, and if you're around on Monday, September 21, there's a third night to follow.

Friday belongs to Payton, a New Orleans multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and cultural theorist who's picked up a GRAMMY along the way. He's playing in a trio with Eric Wheeler and Gerry Gibbs. Saturday is McPherson's turn, the saxophonist arriving as a 2026 Jazz Legacies Fellow; he'll be joined by Tito Carrillo, Ross Margitza, Ryan Hagler, and Daniel Dufour. Then on Monday, Payton returns to lead the Monks Jazz Orchestra.

That Monday night is more than just another date. It kicks off '10 Years of Monks,' a week-long celebration of the club's first decade, which will run through live tapings and listening-room concerts. So if you've been following the club since it opened, that's the night to mark.

All three nights—Friday, Saturday, and Monday—have two sessions: 7:30–9 PM and 9:30–11 PM. Tickets are $37.83 to $42.95, and you can find the club at 310 E. Saint Elmo in Austin.
